چکیده

We demonstrate how measuring orbital period derivatives can lead to more accurate distance estimates and transverse velocities for some nearby binary pulsars. In many cases this method will estimate distances more accurately than is possible by annual parallax, as the relative error decreases as t. Unfortunately, distance uncertainties limit the degree to which nearby relativistic binary pulsars can be used for testing the general relativistic prediction of orbital period decay to a few percent. Nevertheless, the measured orbital period derivative of PSR B1534+12 agrees within the observational uncertainties with that predicted by general relativity if the proper-motion contribution is accounted for. Tests of General Relativity at Large Distances and Dark Matter

The most simple observed cases of gravitational lensing of distant quasars and galaxies by galaxies and clusters of galaxies are used to test Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and Newtonian Gravity over galactic and intergalactic distances. They extend the distance range over which Newton-Einstein Gravity has been tested by 10 orders of magnitude. Although the precision of the tests are f...

Overview of Pulsar Tests of General Relativity

Radio pulsar observations can be used to test aspects of general relativity from equivalence principle violations to binary orbital effects in the strong-field regime. This article summarizes the status of such tests at the start of the meeting, and describes two new tests made possible by recent observations of well-known binary pulsar systems.

The Confrontation between General Relativity and Experiment

The status of experimental tests of general relativity and of theoretical frameworks for analysing them are reviewed. Einstein's equivalence principle (EEP) is well supported by experiments such as the Eötvös experiment, tests of special relativity, and the gravitational redshift experiment. Future tests of EEP and of the inverse square law will search for new interactions arising from unificat...

Pulsar Timing Observations and Tests of General Relativity in Double-neutron-star Binaries

We describe the techniques used in pulsar timing observations, and show how these observations may be applied to tests of strong-field general relativity for doubleneutron-star binary systems. We describe the tests of GR resulting from the PSRs B1913+16 and B1534+12 systems. For the latter pulsar, 5 ”Post-Keplerian” timing parameters are measurable, including the orbital period derivative and t...

Binary-pulsar Tests of Strong-field Gravity and Gravitational Radiation Damping∗

This talk reviews the constraints imposed by binary-pulsar data on gravity theories, focusing on “tensor-scalar” ones which are the best motivated alternatives to general relativity. We recall that binary-pulsar tests are qualitatively different from solar-system experiments, because of nonperturbative strong-field effects which can occur in compact objects like neutron stars, and because one c...
